Inside The Hive with Coco Li

Can you give me a brief overview of your career to date?

After graduating from university, I began my career as a human resources specialist. However, after about eight years, I decided to pursue a new path, and have spent the last two years working as a software developer.

What sort of work do you do at Cevo?

I am currently working as a Full Stack Development Consultant at Cevo, however this wasn’t always the case. I initially joined the team as a front-end developer, but quickly discovered a passion for back-end development, too.

What do you love most about working at Cevo?

One of the things I love most about Cevo is its unique structure, where each employee has a dedicated POD leader. My POD leader has been a valuable mentor, helping me to map out my career goals and development path so I can continue to grow and succeed.

This collaboration extends beyond just our individual PODs too, with a number of channels and groups for us to engage with one another, share news on the latest technologies and ask questions.

What moment are you most proud of in your career to date?

During the first of Melbourne’s Covid lockdowns, I undertook a personal side project that I’m very proud of. This involved building an application that automatically scanned supermarket websites for toilet paper stock levels and sent notifications via email. The solution was very useful for friends and family who were struggling to find toilet paper during this time. I was proud of the positive impact technology and my software development skills had, particularly so early in my career.

What advice would you give to other women considering entering the industry?

My journey from human resources to software development is a great example of the opportunities a career in IT can provide. With very few limitations, my key piece of advice for anyone thinking about making a similar transition is to have a clear goal, visualise it, and map out the steps to get there. It’s also important to never stop learning. With technology advancing quickly, there’s always something new to learn and challenges to overcome, making it an incredibly rewarding career.
