Transforming a core wealth platform through a large-scale AWS migration
Cevo migrated a critical wealth management platform to AWS, delivering up to 160% faster batch processing and doubling payments performance. One of Australia’s largest financial institutions needed to modernise a highly complex, business-critical system built more than two decades ago to reduce risk, improve scalability and remove reliance on ageing infrastructure. Cevo led the migration to AWS, carefully transitioning thousands of interconnected components while maintaining business continuity. The result is a fully cloud-based platform that performs faster, is more secure and gives the organisation greater flexibility to test, access data and support future growth.

Business challenge
The organisation’s core wealth platform had evolved over more than 25 years into a highly complex environment supporting hundreds of applications and business processes. At its centre was a backend system responsible for processing transactions and coordinating complex data flows across the broader ecosystem.
As the platform grew, so did the operational challenges. The existing Sybase environment made it harder to scale, slower to optimise performance and increasingly risky due to its end-of-life status. Testing was also limited, with teams relying on a single environment, which slowed down change and increased release risk.
The organisation set out to modernise this core platform to improve performance, strengthen security and enable greater agility, while ensuring continuity for critical operations. This required a carefully planned migration approach capable of managing significant scale and interdependencies.
Solution
Cevo delivered a full migration of the core backend platform from AWS, transitioning a highly complex and tightly integrated system to a modern, cloud-based architecture.
Discovery and planning
Cevo worked closely with the organisation to understand the full scope of the environment, including more than 100 applications, over 1,000 batch processes and thousands of database objects, stored procedures and scripts. This phase focused on mapping dependencies, defining migration pathways and establishing a structured execution plan to minimise risk and disruption.
Migration and validation
The migration involved transitioning thousands of database objects, stored procedures and more than 2,000 tables, along with extensive historical data and embedded business logic. Cevo executed multiple validation cycles, including a full dry run, to confirm that data integrity, performance and system behaviour met expectations prior to production cutover.
Close coordination across teams ensured that all integrations and touchpoints, including CRM platforms, entitlement systems and data services, continued to operate seamlessly throughout the migration.
AWS enablement and optimisation
Cevo implemented the platform on AWS RDS, enabling improved scalability, resilience and operational control. The architecture supports increased processing capacity, real-time data access via read replicas and the ability to provision testing environments on demand.
The migration was delivered over a seven-month period from initial mobilisation to production go-live.
Outcomes
The migration provides a stronger foundation for the organisation’s wealth platform, with clear improvements in performance, scalability and operational flexibility.
- Improved performance: Increased batch processing speeds up to 160%, reducing processing windows and improving operational efficiency.
- Faster payments processing: Delivered a 100% improvement in payments performance, supporting higher transaction throughput.
- Successful large-scale migration: Transitioned thousands of database objects, over 2,000 tables and extensive historical data to AWS within a seven-month timeframe, maintaining business continuity and minimising operational risk.
- Enhanced scalability: Enabled access to significantly greater processing capacity through AWS to support growth and peak demand.
- Flexible testing capability: Removed reliance on a single testing environment, allowing teams to provision environments as needed and improve release confidence.
- Real-time data access: Introduced read replicas, eliminating the need for daily database restores and improving access to operational data.
- Stronger security controls: Enhanced data encryption across the platform, reducing risk and addressing previously identified security concerns.
- Reduced legacy dependency: Removed reliance on ageing, end-of-life infrastructure and transitioned to a fully supported platform.
- Full cloud adoption: Achieved a fully cloud-based core platform, enabling ongoing modernisation and innovation.
