With operations in sixteen countries, Datamine provides solutions ranging from exploration data management and orebody modelling to mine planning and operations to over 2000 companies worldwide. Datamine’s software solutions integrate with their consulting and training services to ensure that they provide their clients with industry-leading support and expertise.
Business challenge
As Datamine continues to expand its business, the cost of operating cloud infrastructure has steadily increased. The organisation has made efforts to reduce these costs, including conducting an AWS Well-Architected Review at the beginning of 2022. However, with the constant growth and expansion, Datamine was looking for more ways to drive further cost efficiencies and maximise the efficiency of its cloud infrastructure.
Solution
To help achieve these objectives, Datamine engaged Cevo to identify additional cost optimisation opportunities in the organisation’s AWS environment, while ensuring that the cloud infrastructure still met the required performance and operational requirements.
The analysis was conducted over a period of one week, with a goal to identify opportunities to optimise Datamine’s AWS spend. The objectives of the project were:
- Identify the cost components associated with the provision of cloud services by AWS
- Analyse the cost drivers and trends associated with each component
- Identify areas where cost savings could be realised without impacting service quality
- Develop and recommend cost optimisation strategies
Cevo conducted an investigation and analysis of Datamine’s AWS billing details, infrastructure and application usage during the initial phase of the engagement. A report was then constructed, including documented findings of the sources of cost and ranked recommendations to achieve savings as soon as possible.
Cevo’s consultants then assisted Datamine to prioritise cost savings through the implementation of changes to AWS environments, services, and processes focusing first on any ‘low hanging fruit’ discovered during the investigation phase. Longer-term recommendations that can be implemented by Datamine post-engagement were also identified.
Deliverables included:
- A cost identification report
- An itemised list of cost remediation recommendations
- Implementation of prioritised cost savings where agreed by Datamine

Outcomes
The implementation of Cevo’s cost identification and optimisation technique delivered the following benefits for Datamine:
- Based on the cost optimisation analysis, Cevo’s consultants identified an opportunity for immediate reductions on the monthly AWS bill.
- A total of 12 cost optimisation findings were found across different AWS services. The majority of the suggestions were put into practise quickly by Cevo consultants and Datamine.
- Following the Cevo engagement, the Datamine team completed the implementation of all remaining cost improvement recommendations.
- Based on the findings, the team identified several areas where cost savings could be realised without impacting service quality. The AWS services where most of the findings were identified include EC2, RDS and EBS.
- Additional findings were uncovered that have the potential to not only achieve further cost savings but also enhance the team’s security posture and facilitate the application and infrastructure deployment in a cloud native way.
